JEFFERSON PARK CIRCLE KITCHEN

This mid-century modern house was purchased by local restauranteurs. The existing kitchen couldn’t expand from its galley layout because of the adjacent stairs, but more space and function was needed. The solution was to appropriate an adjacent bedroom as a kitchen wing with a satellite work area, dishwashing station, and pantry space. The kitchen wall was opened up to the living room with bar seating between.

FRAY’S GRANT KITCHEN

The quality of the existing kitchen, breakfast room, and bar weren’t quite commensurate with the quality of the house, so a renovation was in order. The owner, being the creative sort, had lots of great ideas but needed a translator to bring them to fruition. Walls were opened up to better connect the spaces, and windows and doors were enlarged to increase light while maintaining the symmetry of the house’s exterior. Every cabinet was considered individually in terms of material, style, and function; they combine to form a rich language across the three rooms.

DOGTROT KITCHEN

Having worked in the restaurant business, the owners wanted the features and functions of a professional kitchen. The range is situated between a corner window that gives a vantage point from which to keep track of children and animals and a french door that opens onto a dining terrace. The stainless steel counter makes children’s art projects an easy clean-up. Two sinks with an integral drainboard between them renders a countertop dish drainer unnecessary. Although it’s the center of family life, custom cabinets integrate efficient storage solutions to make this a hard working room.

FENDALL KITCHEN

The existing kitchen of this house was very small but the stone exterior walls of the house prohibited enlargement. The solution was to convert the dining room into a new kitchen due to its larger size and adjacency to the family room’s stone fireplace and exposed timber beams. The original kitchen was converted into a mudroom for this active family of four. The finish of Egyptian antique lights matches the custom copper hood and sinks in the kitchen. The unfinished basement made it easy to run new plumbing to a previously unplumbed room, and an advantage to gutting the interior was that foam insulation could be sprayed onto the interior faces of the stone walls.

MONTEBELLO KITCHEN

Serious gardeners inhabit this mountain cabin.  Cleaning, canning, and preserving large amounts of vegetables are tasks not accommodated in a typical kitchen, so one goal of this project was to convert the existing kitchen into a “summer kitchen” with a new door leading directly outside, a large sink, plenty of counter space, and open shelves for storing canning jars.  A new kitchen, mudroom, and porch were added to the house in keeping with its rustic, simple construction and modest scale.  The owners are enamored with 1940’s style and were excited to refurbish and include vintage kitchen components in the new design.

PARK STREET KITCHEN

This kitchen is located on the periphery of a large, old house that was originally designed to accommodate servants. Narrow doorways into a very formal dining room and back hallway made it difficult for the present family’s four children to circulate and interact with their mother, an enthusiastic cook. By enlarging doorways, locating a new eating counter outside of the main work area, and building a screened porch off the kitchen, this room becomes the hub from which the family operates. The existing heart pine cabinets in the room were inventoried and incorporated into the design, while new cabinets to complete the new layout were built to match the old ones.
